Use FontDrop! Offline

Because this question or wish has come up a few times, here is a quick and simple way to use FontDrop! as an offline standalone app.

In General

FontDrop! offers a quick and simple way to check what is inside your font file. FontDrop! is a progressive web app and works in the browser. No font file is uploaded to a server or saved anywhere else. Everything is processed and shown only on your machine. (We track some basic and anonymous user interactions to have a little bit of an overview on how often the app is used, but that’s all.)

So if you have loaded the FontDrop! website in your browser and keep it in your browser, the app should work even if your internet connection is disrupted. But this is not the only solution…

How To Use FontDrop! As An Offline App

Just recently I came across another very simple way to use a web app as a simple desktop app. This approach might not work well with all web apps, but it works perfectly with FontDrop! because FontDrop! does not need any server side action for its process.

Here are the steps:
(Google Chrome browser needed)

  1. On your computer, open the Chrome browser.
  2. Go to www.fontdrop.info
  3. In the browser at the top right, select More >> then Cast, Save, and Share >> and then Install Page as App….
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

These steps will create a standalone app and a desktop icon for FontDrop! and everything should work even without an internet connection.

You can do this on an Android smartphone following this instructions or on iPhone and iPad too.

Happy dropping!
